The Department of Occupational and Environmental Health consists of Division of Occupational Health, Division of Environmental Health, and Division of Hygienic Toxicology. The department has a total of 20 faculty members, including 11 professors (10 being PhD supervisors) and 8 associate Professors. Occupational and Environmental Health belongs to the Key Discipline of Jiangsu Province, which has been eligible to confer doctoral degrees since 2003. The Key Laboratory of Environmental Medicine Engineering, Ministry of Education, is affiliated to this discipline. Hygienic Toxicology was also granted the right to confer doctoral degrees in 2005.
The department aims to study the health impacts of physical and chemical factors from the molecular, cellular and population perspectives, and to explore measures for their risk prevention, intervention and management. The department undertook a 863 project, a number of research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, and many provincial and ministerial research projects. Over the past 5 years, the department has received 8 ministerial or provincial awards, and published more than 200 papers including 80 SCI papers.
Main characteristics and advantages:
1, research on health risk and control of environmental factors-To investigate the health consequences and biological effects of environmental pollution (e.g. PM2.5, formaldehyde, cooking oil fumes, Microcystin, Disinfected byproducts, etc.), and to develop the prevention and control technology for environmental pollution.
2, research on the pathogenic mechanism and control of occupational hazards-To explore the molecular mechanisms of benzene andnoise using “Omics”methods, and to explore the measures for prevention and treatment of occupational stress.
3, research on nanotoxicology-To carry out health risk assessment for different nano-materials and to participate in the development of health standards.
