The Department of Epidemiology and Health Statistics originated from the Department of Epidemiology and Health Statistics of Nanjing Railway Medical College, which was established in 1976. A group of influential teachers countrywide have taught here, including Xiao Qingyan, Wang Fuzhen, Jin Baoxiang, Zhao Jiwen, Chen Qiguang, Wang Ning and Shen Qijun.
Epidemiology and health statistics are the main disciplines of public health. In 1984, the former department of epidemiology began to enroll the first batch of master degree student. In 1986, it was approved by the State Council's Academic Degree Evaluation Committee for Master Degree Awarding. It was the first discipline with master degree awarding qualification inside the School of Public Health. It was also the first department capable of awarding master degree of epidemiology in Jiangsu Province. In 1993, the former department of health statistics was approved for Master Degree Awarding, and then awarded “Excellent Key Courses of Jiangsu Province” in 1994 and “Key Discipline of the Ministry of Railways” in 1996. According to the new discipline catalogues of the Ministry of Education, the two disciplines were formally merged into the Department of Epidemiology and Health Statistics in 1997. In 2001, the department, as a co-construction institution, established the provincial '135 Project' key laboratory with the Jiangsu Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2002, it was included in the first phase of the '985 Project' construction project of Southeast University. The courses such as “epidemiology”, “clinical epidemiology” and “medical statistics” were awarded as outstanding courses for undergraduate and master students in Southeast University.
The department possesses a high-level teaching team with strong capacity in teaching and research. There are 4 professors, 5 associate professors and 4 lecturers in the department, including 9 master’s supervisors and 4 doctoral supervisors. More than 85% of the teachers have doctoral degree, and over 50% of them have overseas study experience.
The department has undertaken more than 100 national, provincial and ministerial-level and international cooperation projects, and developed a number of research directions such as biostatistical methods and their applications in medicine, epidemiology of infectious diseases, epidemiology of non-communicable diseases, research and technical evaluation of health services, health education and health promotion. It has won many awards of different levels and aspects, and has certain influencial impact among domestic peers. The teachers of department have participated as chief editors and editor in the publication of more than 30 academic monographs and textbooks. They have also published hundreds of academic papers in all-level domestic and international journals, and dozens of SCI papers. The department has established long-term cooperative relationships with many universities at home and abroad, providing a good communication platform for talent training and high-level scientific research. Nearly 200 doctoral and master students have already graduated from the department.
