The Department of Nutrition and Food Hygiene is composed of three disciplines: Nutrition and Food Hygiene, Hygienic Analytical Chemistry, Child and Adolescent Hygiene. At present, the disciplines offer Master and PhD programs of Nutrition and Food Hygiene. There are 6 postgraduate supervisors (3 doctoral supervisors). So far, the department has trained more than 100 master's students and over 30 doctoral students, among which 3 excellent master dissertations of university have been granted.
The disciplines received a number of awards including: the Second Prize for Higher Education Teaching Achievements of Jiangsu Province (2000), the Excellent Curriculum Group Award of Southeast University (2004), and the Third Prize and the Second Prize for Higher Education Teaching Achievements of Southeast University in 2007 and 2011, respectively. The course titled Reasonable Diet and Food Safety, taught by Professor Sun Guiju, was granted the High-Quality Open Video Course by the Ministry of Education in 2016.
Guided by the great needs of national economic construction and social development, the department has actively carried out fundemental and applied researches. The research directions included nutrition and chronic disease prevention, phytochemicals and food function, analysis of food ingredients and pollutants, and risk exposure assessment for food safety. In the past five years, the department has obtained 13 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 8 projects at the provincial and ministerial levels, 4 international cooperation projects, and participated in 3 national key research and development projects. It has won the first prize of Scientific and Technological Progress Award of Nanjing City, the third prize of Scientific and Technological Progress Award of Jiangsu province, and the second prize of Nutritional Scientific Award authorized by the Jiangsu Nutrition Society. It has also obtained 18 patents and 1 computer software copyright, and published nearly 70 SCI papers.
