The department of health insurance was established in 1995, and it was developed on the basis of the teaching and research offices of the school of public health, such as health administration, social medicine, health statistics, health economics, etc. In September, 1995, it enrolled the first batch of undergraduate students majoring in medical insurance. In June of 1999, it was accredited by the Jiangsu Provincial Education Commission and granted the right to confer bachelor's degree in economics. In December of the same year, it was approved to establish a department of medical insurance. According to the professional catalogues adjusted by the Ministry of Education of China, medical insurance belonged to the major of labor and social security, and the department then became one of the first eight universities to recruit students majoring in labor and social security. Currently, this major awards bachelor's degree in labor and social security professional (medical insurance direction). In 2003, it was approved as the first master's degree program of labor and social security (medical insurance direction) in China, and in the same year, it recruited the first batch of master's students of medical insurance in China. In 2005, it was approved by the Department of Education of Jiangsu Province as a featured major in Jiangsu province.
The establishment of the undergraduate major of labor and social security is to adapt to and meet the requirements of the reform of China's medical security system. This major focuses on the cultivation of interdisciplinary talents with both conventional medical knowledge and health insurance skills. It is an interdisciplinary specialty integrating medicine, economy, finance and management.
There are 2 professors, 4 associate professors and 4 lecturers in the department. 50% of them have a doctoral degree. Ten joint supervisors and part-time professors from off-campus bases were invited, including the former and the current director of medical insurance of theMinistry of Labor and Social Security (Wuritu and Yao Hong), as well as a group of scholars and management experts with theoretical and practical experience, such as from the Labor and Social Security Department of Jiangsu Province and the Health Department. The department has established good relationships of exchange and cooperation with Renmin University of China, Fudan university, Nanjing university, Taiwan university, Asian University of Taiwan, and Zhongzheng University of Taiwan. After more than 20 years of teaching practice and exploration, the department has formed a relatively mature and stable personnel training model, and has trained a group of urgently needed medical insurance professionals for the country and society.
